Our Teaching Style
At Tutorie, we work closely with local grammar schools to customise our teaching approach for the 11+ exams. With a strong online presence, we’re able to connect with students nationwide, gaining valuable insights into the various 11+ exam formats to provide tailored support for each.
Since most local grammar schools now focus primarily on Maths and English, these are our core areas of instruction. However, we also offer comprehensive support in Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
Maths
The 11+ exams are among the most challenging in a child's academic journey, and the maths taught in primary schools often falls short of the level needed for both the exams and building a strong foundation for secondary school. These exams heavily feature real-world word problems, which students rarely encounter in primary school, making them a potential shock during the exam. To address this, we dedicate each week to a different topic—such as fractions, decimals, percentages, and algebra—areas that are not covered in enough depth in schools.
We place a strong emphasis on exam technique, teaching students how to break down seemingly complex questions into manageable, bite-sized steps. Our approach goes beyond simply showing how to solve problems - we believe understanding the "why" behind each method is crucial, yet often overlooked; this approach helps us stand out from other tuition services available. This deeper understanding not only strengthens a student's grasp of the subject but also helps them retain information and develop critical thinking. Knowing the reasoning behind each concept enables students to apply their knowledge more effectively across different topics and contexts.
English
At Tutorie, our English sessions are specifically designed to prepare students for the 11+ English exams, which typically consist of two rounds:
Round 1: Multiple-choice questions and occasionally short-answer questions.
Round 2: Short and long-answer questions, along with a creative writing component.
In some 11+ exams, there is no dedicated Verbal Reasoning section. Instead, literacy reasoning questions are integrated into the English paper. These may include tasks such as identifying rhyming words, solving anagrams and crosswords, finding the odd word out, rearranging jumbled words into sentences, or organizing scrambled sentences and paragraphs.
Our lessons focus on key areas such as reading comprehension, SPAG (spelling, punctuation, and grammar), logical reasoning, vocabulary, and exam techniques. Students are regularly assigned writing tasks for homework, which are carefully marked with personalized feedback to pinpoint areas of weakness. This helps them make meaningful progress well before exam day. Upon enrolling, students will also receive a curated reading list and vocabulary guide to further enhance their creative writing and long-form responses.
Our Assessments
Regular assessments are key to 11+ exam success, reinforcing learning while identifying strengths and weaknesses. We provide tailored feedback and are always available to assist. Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns.
Monthly Assessment
Our regular assessments are essential for both you and our teachers to track your child's progress, helping us identify their strengths and the areas that need further development.
Each month, students will undergo assessments in both Maths and English, conducted under simulated 11+ exam conditions. This preparation helps ensure they are familiar with the exam format and reduces surprises on the 11+ test day. Each test will be graded, and personalised feedback will be given to every student. This will help your child and our teachers identify areas for improvement.
Monthly Reports Comparing Students
Our team will mark each student's assessments and will compile a comparison chart for Maths and English. The chart will display the following:
-
Candidate Number - Keeps students anonymous
-
Percentage Scored
-
Raw Mark Scored
-
Colour Coded Per Question
Beside each question will be colour coded:
-
Red: Incorrect Answer
-
Blue: Unanswered
-
Green: Correct Answer
