Sutton is one of the few London boroughs that kept its grammar school system, which makes the 11+ a much bigger part of local family life here than in most of the country. Tutorie is based in Sutton, and our Head of Education is a Sutton Grammar School alumnus — so we know this process from both sides of the desk.

The London Borough of Sutton has 5 grammar schools, all of which select using the same test — the Selective Eligibility Test (SET):
Greenshaw High School is also worth knowing about — it's a partially-selective school with 60 places allocated via the SET, alongside non-selective places.
The SET is a two-stage process. Stage 1 is a multiple-choice English and Maths test sat by every applicant in mid-September of Year 6. Children who meet the qualifying standard move to Stage 2 — a written English and Maths paper, shared across the three boys' schools and, separately, the two girls' schools. Registration typically opens in May and closes at the end of July, well before the test itself, so early preparation matters.

Sutton High School (GDST) is the main independent option within the borough — a girls' school from 3–18. Its 11+ entry combines an online assessment, a paper-based exam, and a short interview, and every 11+ applicant is automatically considered for an academic scholarship.
A number of Sutton families also look just over the border into Croydon, at schools such as Whitgift School and Trinity School — both highly-regarded boys' independent schools with their own entrance assessments covering English, Maths and reasoning, plus an interview stage for shortlisted candidates.
Many other independent schools nationally use the ISEB Common Pre-Test as part of their process, alongside their own school-specific paper or interview — worth checking directly with any independent school you're considering, as requirements vary.
Some of our most ambitious Sutton families also prepare for super-selective schools outside the borough — including Kent Test grammar schools and St Olave's Grammar School in Orpington. St Olave's runs its own two-stage entrance test (also confusingly called a "SET", but entirely separate from Sutton's), with a multiple-choice Stage 1 in English, Maths and reasoning, followed by a more demanding written Stage 2 for those who qualify.
