11+ Tutoring in Croydon

Croydon no longer has state grammar schools of its own, so families here typically choose between the borough's strong independent schools or travelling to one of the neighbouring grammar school systems — Sutton to the west or Bromley to the east. Grammar schools

There are no state grammar schools within Croydon itself, but two well-known systems are close by:

• Sutton's 5 grammar schools (Sutton Grammar, Wallington County Grammar and Wilson's for boys; Nonsuch and Wallington High for girls) all select via the shared Selective Eligibility Test (SET), sat in mid-September of Year 6. See our full 2026 Sutton SET guide.
• Bromley's grammar schools — Newstead Wood School (girls) and St Olave's Grammar School (boys) in Orpington — each run their own separate entrance test. Newstead Wood's is a single day of verbal and non-verbal reasoning papers delivered by GL Assessment; St Olave's runs its own two-stage test in September and November.

Private & independent schools

Croydon itself has several well-regarded independent schools with their own 11+ assessments:

• Whitgift School (boys) — English, Maths and reasoning, sat in January
• Trinity School (boys, becoming co-educational at Year 6/7 entry from September 2027) — an online assessment, a guided written paper, and an interview for shortlisted candidates
• Old Palace of John Whitgift School (girls)
• Croydon High School (GDST) (girls)
• Royal Russell School (co-educational) — an online test, a written paper and a short interview

Many independent schools nationally also use the ISEB Common Pre-Test alongside their own paper or interview — always worth confirming directly with the school.
