Carshalton sits within the London Borough of Sutton, one of the few London boroughs to keep its full grammar school system — so the 11+ is a familiar topic for most Carshalton families with a child in Year 5 or 6. Tutorie is based locally in Sutton, and our Head of Education is a Sutton Grammar School alumnus.
Here's what Carshalton families need to know, and how we can help.
All 5 of Sutton's grammar schools are within easy reach of Carshalton, and all select using the same Selective Eligibility Test (SET):
The SET is a two-stage process: a multiple-choice English and Maths test in mid-September of Year 6, then a written Stage 2 paper for those who qualify, shared across the boys' schools and separately across the girls' schools. Registration opens in May and closes at the end of July.

Sutton High School (GDST) is the nearest independent option, a girls' school (3–18) whose 11+ process combines an online assessment, a written paper and a short interview, with every applicant automatically considered for an academic scholarship.
Some Carshalton families also look towards Croydon's Whitgift School and Trinity School, both selective boys' independent schools with their own English, Maths and reasoning assessments.
Many other independent schools use the ISEB Common Pre-Test alongside a school-specific paper or interview — worth checking directly with the school.
Some Carshalton families also prepare for schools further out, including Kent Test grammars and St Olave's Grammar School in Orpington, which runs its own separate two-stage test. Let us know if this is on your list and we'll tailor preparation accordingly.
